The Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Budo-Egba, on Monday, 1st December 2025, received a high-level accreditation team from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) as part of the ongoing evaluation of its emerging medical training centre.
The three-man delegation, led by Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye, Medical Director of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba (and Chairman of the team), included Prof. Benjamin Adekunle Eegunranti and Dr. Abubakar Baguda, Medical Director of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kware, Sokoto State, who served as Secretary of the team.
During the visit, the accreditation panel inspected key hospital facilities, held interactive sessions with clinicians and staff, and assessed the institution’s preparedness for full postgraduate medical training.
Dr. Owoeye commended the hospital’s “remarkable growth and infrastructure development within just three years,” describing the progress as “incredible and highly promising for psychiatric training in Nigeria.” He further noted that the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Budo-Egba, is positioned to become the first dedicated psychiatric hospital in the North-Central region that will also serve as a training and research institute for medical doctors, with the capacity to train and produce postgraduate doctors.
Prof. Eegunranti and Dr. Baguda echoed similar commendations, praising the management and staff for maintaining standards of service delivery and demonstrating readiness for advanced medical education.
Of particular note was the Drug Abuse Treatment Centre, which has been built to standard. The team also commended the inpatient feeding initiative of the hospital through its well-equipped canteen. The innovative electronic medical record system and the diagnostic laboratory with a self-styled modular oxygen unit were equally praised.
The visit marks a significant step in the hospital’s drive to expand mental health service capacity while becoming a major hub for psychiatric training and research in Nigeria. While the outcome of the accreditation is being awaited, the hospital is closer to securing its place as a centre of excellence for producing future specialists in mental health.
The team was received by the Medical Director, Professor B.A. Issa, and other members of the management.
